At the time when the Filipino audience had very limited choices for what local films to watch, our CEO Erwin “Lucky” Blanco, a movie fan himself, began his goal of elevating the standards for Filipino mainstream movies.
Guided by his fervent trust in the Filipino audience, he pushed to develop concepts that offered variety and a higher taste level than that of the quintessential “Aling Bebang”, a fictional character that bigger studios assumed as the type that comprised most of the local movie-going public. This was the myth that needed to be broken and MAVX Productions was born to do just that.
Fresh from the success of his stint as one of the Executive Producers of the phenomenal Kita-Kita, Lucky invested in his first independent feature, another brazen project that involved the country’s elusive matinee idol, Aga Muhlach. The concept in itself was a leap of faith. This project was NUUK (2019), the first-ever Asian film that was shot in isolated Greenland.
The film was screened in Denmark as well cinemas across North America and has proven that an obscure production company like MAVX can indeed achieve nearly impossible feats considering its humble roots.
This project was then followed by a slew of film projects that were calculated risks. In 2020 during the pandemic, Netflix acquired several of Mavx Production’s films, one of them being “Ang Pangarap Kong Holdap”, a film that had no big stars yet had a story that epitomized Mavx’s commitment to creating out-of-the-box projects. The unprecedented success of this movie, proven by its engagement in the online platform, paved the way for Mavx’s succeeding film releases.
“Finding Agnes” was released globally in November 2020 as a Netflix Original that was released globally- only the second Filipino film to have this distinction.
This is how MAVX has gained its niche in the local film industry as we continue to produce films here and abroad that are acknowledged as some of the best not only by local distributors but also by international platforms that bring our content to an unlimited variety of audiences.
